Rolfing
Rolfing® was developed by Ida Rolf. She sought to discover what “conditions must be fulfilled in order for the human body-structure to be organized and integrated in gravity so that the whole person can function in the most optimal and economical way" She found that manipulating the body's connective tissue helped achieve this goal.
Rolfing is Myofascial Release for Structural Integration. A combination of hands-on, soft tissue manipulation techniques with movement & perception education, working via the web-like, fascial complex of connective tissues. CranioSacral listening and unwinding is often blended into Rolfing treatments to increase organ & joint motility and system flow.
Does Rolfing hurt? Listening to the tissue is crucial. If pressure alone is used to gauge the level of contact, it will always feel too painful or too light. The intensity of the treatment depends on the client's needs. The most effective approach is to reach to the tissue depth ready for change that is asking to be met. Rolfing, when used with sophistication and finesse, can easily work within the client's boundaries of intensity & discomfort.
“Fascia is the organ of posture. Nobody ever says this; all the talk is about muscles. Yet this is a very important concept.... The body is a web of fascia. A spiderweb is in a plane. This web is in a sphere. We can trace the lines of that web to get an understanding of how what we see in a body works.” -Ida Rolf

Rolfing evolves the way we perceive ourselves. It is common for people to experience emotional, mental, social & spiritual growth while undergoing a Rolfing series. The goal of Rolfing is not to get the body back to where it was before injury or pain; Rolfing seeks to evolve the body & help it reach it's yet unrealized potentials. "We are not truly upright, we are only on our way to being upright. This is a metaphysical consideration. One of the jobs of a Rolfer is to speed that process along. We want to get a man out of the place where gravity is his enemy. We want to get him into the place where gravity reinforces him and is a friend, a nourishing force.” -Ida Rolf
“This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.” -Ida Rolf
Goals of Rolfing...
After sessions, clients report less pain, increased mobility, improved body awareness and a sense of ease in being upright....but what is the big point of getting all nice and straitened out?? So we can move with greater joy, vitality & fun!! WE ARE HERE TO BE ENGAGED WITH AND STAY ACTIVE FOR LIFE!

What to expect from Rolfing sessions? Sessions typically last 75-90 minutes. Clients can wear loose comfortable clothes, or treatments can be done with clients in their underwear. Initial treatments are often given in the form of a 10 series. Advanced treatments can be given in series of 3 to 5. However, the client will benefit from the treatments no matter how many they initially end up doing. It is up to the client choose how many sessions they are available for.
